Daily Cartoons
When I tell people I’m a cartoonist, there’s always a slew of fun questions that follow. How did you get into it? How do you make money? Are your parents proud of you? The answer to most of them is - leave me alone/how did you get into my house? However, my favorite question is: ‘how do you come up with ideas?’
I never know how to respond to that. There’s the pompous answer which is I am just inspired by everything and everyone around me and how I just take it all in - blahhh blah blah. And there’s the more real answer which is that my brain is a never ending field of nonsense so much so that I need to swaddle and dose myself with melatonin to get it to shut up for the night.
Whenever I think of an idea, I have to actively stop myself from dropping everything that I’m doing to draw it. The only times I allow myself to do that is for daily cartoon submissions. They are always timely topics and the news cycle changes so fast these days, you might miss the opportunity. It’s so gratifying when one get’s picked up. But, I also find joy in drawing them for comedy’s sake.
As long as I make myself laugh, that’s already an accomplishment. Which is why I had a lot of fun last week making these cartoons.
Go Knicks,
Ellen
