The All Mighty Algorithm
And other rantings about the state of the internet
Back in my day, social media apps showed you posts in the chronological order in which it was posted. It allowed us to view all the posts we wanted to see until we reached the stuff we already saw. Now, we are bound to the All Mighty Algorithm.
The algorithm decides what you see, what you hear, and what you show.
I have never wanted to be a content creator. I don’t want to make content, I want to make weird art that makes people ask if I’m okay.
However, I decided to give in a little. I draw my little Bean Boy doing silly things and as famous cartoon characters. And somehow, I was approved for the TikTok creator program.
Awesome.
I make videos and I get paid, correct?
Nope. Videos have to be over a minute long.
Okay, did that. Is it good now?
Nope. Videos have to get over 1000 views to be eligible.
Okay, a couple of them hit the criteria, will I be paid for my work?
Nope. Those did so well that we’re going to limit the exposure of your other videos and then offer you “deals” to buy more views.
It’s absolutely maddening and I have no solution, so here are some Bean Boys to brighten the mood. (Mind you, one of these got 6,000+ views and the rest under 100 - good luck guessing which was the ‘lucky’ one!)
Stay strong fellow creators,
Ellen
